On Friday 8th March we joined in the world wide celebrations of International Women’s Day – and what a day!
We opened our doors to the public for free, to allow everyone to join in the celebrations and meet the sheroes of West Midlands Police, and hundreds of visitors came to see us! We were pleased to see so many families, students, and retired officers join us to learn more about the history of women in policing, and recognise the huge achievements of serving officers today.
Visitors had the opportunity to chat to teams from all across the force; from dog handlers, recruitment, travel teams, firearms and many more – hearing the stories from the women who represent the force and our community so brilliantly.
Corinne Brazier, Heritage Manager, engaged audiences with a talk on the history of women in policing, particularly focusing on those who play a large part in our history here at the Lock-Up. Meanwhile, Museum Engagement Officer Archie challenged families to spot key women around the Lock-Up (both historical, and present!) with a family trail – encouraging young visitors to meet and ask questions of the officers supporting us.
Special visitors included PCC Simon Foster, DCC Scott Green, ACC Claire Bell, and of course, Truffles the force well-being dog! A huge thank you to the teams across the force who joined us; operational support officers, our senior leaders, firearms, dog handlers, cadets, recruitment outreach workers, traffic officers, diversity leads, heritage volunteers, forensics officers, and many more!
