Birmingham City Police

James was killed by enemy fire from German bazooka teams. Along with his fellow crew, he got out of his tank to examine a road block. All were killed. - aged 24

Jacob Indian Munday 2nd October 1945

Jacob is reported as being killed in a 'flying accident while stationed in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). - aged 26

Leslie Hardy 11th September 1945

Birmingham City Police

Leslie succumbed to dysentry and acute enteritis on board ship returning to England from India and was buried at sea. - aged 26

John Albert Winkley 30th June 1945

Birmingham City Police

John was killed in an air crash presumably whilst training. - aged 22

Alan Ernest Underwood BEM 23rd May 1945

Birmingham City Police

Whilst on a day's leave he felt faint and lost his sight, seconds later he died from a coronary thrombosis - aged 27

Sidney Thomas Cooke 5th April 1945

Killed on the KELLEN, LADBERGEN and SCHMEDEHUASEN Canal BRIDGE in an accident - aged 29

John Maxwell Wardrope 27th February 1945

Birmingham City Police

John died as a result of 'friendly fire' from American troops. - aged 26

Eric Grundy 21st February 1945

Eric took part in a bombing sortie over Gravenhorst when the Lancaster plane crashed. - aged 33

George William Howlett 8th February 1945

Coventry City Police

Recalled on reserve at the outbreak of war, George was killed in a road accident. - aged 28

Arthur John Berry 16th January 1945

Arthur was serving on board HM Landing Ship 415 when it was torpedoed during 16/1/1945 resulting in the ship being beached in the Thames estuary. - aged 28

Raymond Athol Bruck 22nd December 1944

Birmingham City Police

Raymond's plane crashed in England during dense fog following a bombing raid on an oil refinery near Stettin, Germany. All crew were killed. - aged 22

Tom Laking 13th December 1944

Birmingham City Police

Tom died in 'an accident' in Italy. - aged 29

Robert Charles Northwood 27th November 1944

Birmingham City Police

Robert was mortally wounded in action and later succumbed to his injuries. - aged 29

Joseph Kenneth Smith 24th November 1944

Joseph failed to return from a mission over Thailand. - aged 25

Walter Wilde 20th October 1944

Died of Wounds serving in the Mediterranean Theatre - aged 27

Sidney Alfred Taylor 15th October 1944

Sadly no other details are known on how Sidney met his death. - aged 32

Maurice Fantham 13th October 1944

Maurice was wounded in an attack by Germans in Corfu, suffering shrapnel wounds and died from his injuries 3 days later - aged 22

Harold was killed during an enemy attack in France. - aged 29

Alfred Bell 25th September 1944

Alfred was killed during some stage of Operation Market Garden near Arnhem. - aged 32

Arthur Perring 23rd September 1944

Birmingham City Police

Arthur was killed when his plane collided with another RAF aircraft while on a bombing sortie over Dortmund. - aged 32

Kenneth William Green 19th September 1944

Coventry City Police

Kenneth was killed on the first day of Operation ‘Market Garden’, transporting glider borne troops to Arnhem. Over 1,300 pilots landed in Holland and of these 229 were killed and 469 wounded or taken prisoner. It is believed that Kenneth survived the landings and was killed fighting with Canadian ground troops. - aged 22

Eric William Rawlins 17th September 1944

Eric and his pilot were killed during an operation to seize Arnhem bridge from the enemy. - aged 27
