We are proud to feature on the AccessAble Website

Published on | General

We have taken another significant step in our commitment to accessibility by becoming featured on the AccessAble website, providing our visitors with detailed information to help them plan their visit with confidence.

AccessAble is a leading provider of accessibility information, offering detailed guides that include facts, measurements and photographs to help people understand exactly what to expect before they arrive at a venue. The guides provide practical information on entrances, parking, facilities and routes throughout the venue, allowing visitors to make informed decisions about their visit.

Our inclusion on AccessAble is our latest milestone in our accessibility journey, which began after winning the New Tourism Business Award in 2024. Following the award, our team set themselves the challenge of making the historic Lock-up as accessible as possible.

This was no small task! Our Victorian building’s listed status and distinctive style presented unique challenges, particularly as it has been out of use since 2016. The team reviewed every stage of the visitor experience to identify ways of making the site more accessible to a wider audience.

While several provisions were already in place, including an accessible entrance and lift, a slim wheelchair for visitor use and a handling collection, the team recognised there was more that could be done. Our work focused not only physical access but also our digital presence, helping support visitors to prepare for their visit before they arrive.

The museum has also introduced a range of additional support measures for visitors with specific access requirements. These include audio tours, guided visits for visually impaired guests, Cookie the Cat SEND backpacks, a dedicated ‘quiet space’ tent and Widgit symbols displayed throughout the building to aid communication and navigation.

Archie, our Senior Museum Education and Engagement Officer, said: “We are delighted to be featured on AccessAble. The guide provides a way for visitors to see detailed information about our facilities before they arrive, helping them feel confident and prepared for their visit. Accessibility is a key priority for us, and this is another important step in ensuring the museum is welcoming for everyone”.
